 Our Story

The Jamestown Teen Center came about as a grassroots effort that was started as a result of an 8th grade Civics project in 2005.  Eighth graders of this class year recognized that teen boredom was a problem in Jamestown. A group of students banded together and created a proposal to establish a Teen Center. The same group took this plan to the Town Council and succeeded in convincing them to provide backing and some funding for their plan.
Initially, there was no permanent space allocated for use as the Teen Center. There was only a calendar of events with some scheduled hours at the Senior Center or Library and with occasional special events and field trips.  In 2007, the first space was allocated at the Rec Center and by 2012, with the support of the community and the Rhode Island Foundation, the renovations in the Recreation Center were completed. The Teen Center and its programs and services have continued to evolve into what they are today.
